Ask an industrial 5G router manufacturer which of its products is best, and the honest answer should be another question: best for what? A router that is ideal for a substation camera mast can be the wrong choice for a parcel locker, and the router that suits a bus may be overkill for a water level sensor. The cellular technology is shared; almost everything else depends on the application.
This article works through six application areas where industrial 5G routers are widely used. For each one, it describes what the router actually has to do, which features matter most, and which E-Lins products fit. It ends with a summary matrix that can be used as a starting point when briefing any manufacturer.
Video Surveillance and Smart City
What the router has to do
Carry continuous video upstream from several cameras, often from poles, junction boxes, or temporary sites with no fixed line, and keep doing it through heat, cold, and power interruptions. Smart city projects add public Wi-Fi, emergency communications, and environmental sensors to the same cabinet.
What matters most
Uplink capacity, PoE to power cameras, enough Gigabit ports, and a way to reduce bandwidth when the network is busy. E-Lins video monitoring designs distinguish between live video and picture-capture mode, where cameras send still images on a schedule or when triggered, using a fraction of the bandwidth.
E-Lins fit
The H900f dual SIM industrial 5G router supports 5G SA/NSA, three Gigabit and two Fast Ethernet ports, PoE In and Out with PoE++ for cameras, and dual SIM hot backup. Where more cameras are needed than the router can power, E-Lins PoE switches such as the EL900-AF-82GN extend the site. For sites limited to 4G, PoE Out models such as the H900t-P2 and H820t-P2 are available.
Intelligent Transportation
What the router has to do
On vehicles, survive transients from the electrical system, vibration, and repeated ignition cycles while connecting ticketing, passenger information, cameras, and location tracking. At the roadside, link traffic signal controllers, information boards, and data acquisition equipment to a central system.
What matters most
Vehicle-grade power protection, GPS, dual SIM for continuity across coverage areas, and for roadside equipment, the ability to replace wire lines without changing the detecting device.
E-Lins fit
The H900f is described by E-Lins as qualified for in-vehicle applications and includes GPS/BeiDou, while the H900t, the company's H900 Gigabit Industrial 4G Router, is ISO 7637-2 compliant with ignition sensing. For roadside traffic data acquisition, E-Lins replaces the wire line from the controller to the centre with a wireless link, without changing the original detection device. A Nordic transport provider using E-Lins equipment for in-vehicle networking and electronic stop displays reduced network interruption to 0.3% in winters down to -32°C.
Power and Energy
What the router has to do
Connect substations, transformers, switches, photovoltaic and wind installations, and pipeline stations to dispatching and SCADA centres. Many sites are scattered along roads, on poles and in remote areas, where power line carrier links can fail with the line and private radio networks are costly and prone to interference.
What matters most
Serial and Ethernet interfaces for RTUs and meters, Modbus support, secure tunnels, wide temperature, electrical isolation and recovery without site visits. In pipeline applications, RTUs at compressor stations often connect to the SCADA centre through a serial interface.
E-Lins fit
For substations and larger sites, the H900f or the compact H685f with a serial port, four DI/DO, and PoE In. For sensors and gateways where full 5G is not needed, 5G RedCap models such as the H685frc and H900frc. For single serial devices, M300/M400 4G modems with RS232/RS485 transparent transmission. All are backed by E-Lins' -35°C to +75°C rating, 15KV ESD protection, and 1.5KV electromagnetic isolation.

Water and Environmental Monitoring
What the router has to do
Report water levels, flow, quality, and environmental readings from remote stations, often outdoors, on solar or battery power, and sometimes with weak coverage.
What matters most
Low power draw, outdoor or compact form factors, high-gain antennas, serial interfaces, and dependable recovery after power dips.
E-Lins fit
The H820QOt is an IP68 outdoor 4G CPE with built-in 14dBi antennas and an 802.3af/at PoE-powered device interface, suited to pole mounting at monitoring stations. For 5G, the H820QOf provides an outdoor 5G CPE option. Compact stations can use the H685t mini 4G router, which measures 100 × 60 × 21 mm and averages around 2 W at 12V, or a 5G RedCap router where standalone 5G coverage exists. Power, water and environmental organisations account for around 20% of E-Lins customers.
Industrial Automation
What the router has to do
Provide remote access to PLCs, HMIs and sensors for monitoring, diagnostics and programme updates, without exposing control equipment to the public internet.
What matters most
Secure VPN, industrial protocols, serial transparent transmission, digital I/O and integration with existing management tools.
E-Lins fit
E-Lins routers support IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard, L2TP, GRE and DMVPN, along with Modbus, TCP/IP and industrial serial transparent transmission. Its 5G modem range, including the H685f and H900f IoT 5G modems, combines Gigabit Ethernet, a serial port, and four DI/DO, and E-Lins lists Modbus and DNP3 among the range's industrial protocols. Management is available through TR-069, SNMP, SSH, and the E-Lins NMS cloud platform.
Self-Service Terminals and Financial Payment
What the router has to do
Keep ATMs, kiosks, parcel lockers, vending machines, and charging stations connected and secure, often from inside crowded metal enclosures, and often in thousands of locations.
What matters most
Small size, low power, strong encryption, stable connections and fleet management. For ATMs, E-Lins recommends GPS as a security feature that helps locate a machine that has been moved.
E-Lins fit
The H685t mini embedded router fits inside kiosks and robots. Dual LTE models such as the H700 and H750tt suit terminals where even a short SIM switchover is unacceptable. A South American gaming equipment manufacturer with 25,000 terminals in eight countries reached a 99.9% data transmission success rate with zero accounting disputes using E-Lins routers. Where a 5G link is wanted, the H685f provides a compact 5G option.

Choosing a Manufacturer That Covers Your Applications
Few integrators work in only one of these areas. A manufacturer whose range covers several of them, with one firmware platform and one management system, makes mixed projects easier to design and support. Shenzhen E-Lins Technology Co., Ltd. has built industrial cellular communication equipment since its industrial roots in 1999, serves customers in more than 150 countries and regions, and supports its range with self-developed firmware, lifetime free firmware upgrades, and 7x24 remote technical support. When briefing any industrial 5G router manufacturer, start from the application, not the model number, and the right product usually becomes obvious.
