I. What Are Herbicides?

Herbicides are chemical products used in agriculture and land management to control unwanted plants and weeds in crop fields, orchards, forests, and other open areas. They work by interfering with specific physiological processes within weeds, restricting their growth or ultimately causing them to die.

With advantages such as efficient weed control, reduced labor requirements, fast results, and wide application possibilities, herbicides have become an important agricultural tool in modern large-scale farming. When used correctly, they can help farmers manage weed pressure and reduce competition between weeds and crops for water, nutrients, sunlight, and growing space.

II. Main Types of Herbicides

1. Classification by Mode of Action

Non-Selective Herbicides:
Non-selective herbicides are formulated to control a wide range of plants without distinguishing between weeds and desirable vegetation. Because they can affect most plants they contact, they are commonly used for vegetation management in wastelands, roadsides, industrial areas, and certain orchard areas where weed removal is required between crop rows.

Selective Herbicides:
Selective herbicides are designed to target particular weed species or groups while minimizing damage to specific crops when applied according to label directions. They are widely used in agricultural fields containing crops such as rice, corn, wheat, soybeans, fruits, and vegetables.

2. Classification by Application Timing

Pre-Emergence Herbicides:
Pre-emergence herbicides are generally applied after seeds have been planted but before the crop and target weeds emerge from the soil. They work primarily within the upper soil layer, creating conditions that inhibit weed seeds from germinating or developing normally. This type of treatment is particularly useful for managing weeds during the early stages of crop growth.

Post-Emergence Herbicides:
Post-emergence herbicides are applied after weeds have already emerged above the soil. The active ingredients are typically absorbed through the weed's leaves and other exposed plant tissues, allowing the treatment to act directly on actively growing weeds. Depending on the product and target weed, visible control can occur relatively quickly.

3. Classification by Translocation Mechanism

Contact Herbicides:
Contact herbicides primarily damage the plant tissues that are directly exposed to the spray. They generally produce relatively rapid visible effects and are particularly suitable for controlling young or annual weeds. However, their effectiveness can be limited when weeds have extensive underground structures or when spray coverage is insufficient.

Systemic Herbicides:
Systemic herbicides are absorbed by the weed and transported through its internal vascular system to other parts of the plant, including stems and roots. By reaching the root system, they can provide more comprehensive control and are often used against persistent or perennial weeds that may regenerate from underground tissues.
